Hi Folks!
At first, I have to say, that I'm from Germany so my english isn't that good.
Me and my Team are currently working on a Half-Life SP modification called Apate - Face the Unknown. We've been working for about six months and I want present the current status to you :)
Apate is (or more exactly: shall become) a Singleplayer Modification for Halflife. Of course it's a strange name, but it surely sounds different from all those "Projects" or "Operations". It´s a Greek word, and so you have to pronounce it "APATË", translated it means as much as illusion.
We're trying to change the usual gameplay: simply shooting on a couple of enemies wouldn't be enough today. Instead of that it will be possible to avoid enemy contact or optionally to attack them from behind. But it's not neccessary. Everyone who wants to play on the classic way by shooting them all down will also be able to do this. In addition to that, there will be a dynamic experience system. For every hit to an enemy by a weapon you get a particular amount of experience. That raises your level up in defined gaps which increases your accuracy and damage. By increasing this damage and accuracy for every weapon on it's own - it is possible - but not neccessary to play Apate with the weapon of your choice.
All weapons will be complete new in comparison with Halflife. All weapons are inspired by existing weapons, just because Apate takes place in reality.
It wouldn't have any point to call a special year. Apate doesn't play in future neither in past. Looking to technical evolution you could call it to play in the 1990's, but there won't be any connections to the political or social proportions at that time. Apate takes place in reality, but not in the same as we do.
You can find more about the story on our website www.apate.net (also available in english, just click on the small flag near the bottom).
But I'm sorry, the "section" from the english page isn't complete, so you have to look in the german version.
It would be very nice of you, if you visit us at www.apate.net and maybe download the mod when it's done ;)
Finally, I'll show you some screens, so you have a motivation to visit our site:

The screenshots look great!! Looks like you guys have some good mappers. If the gameplay and story come out just as good then we have a great mod coming our way. |

Thanks!
We're trying to do a great job, so the mod needs a lot of work to be completed. But I think, it's worth the work and time, so we hope to finish the mod in about 12 months. |

Nice idea, but at the moment, we're having technical problems with our new host and the forums. Posting answers is impossible, so we need to fix this at first. But i present you a new screenshot, so you may forget the problems ;)

Spooky ....
12 months, huh? Are you sure there'll be anyone still playing HF (1) when we reach 2003? |

I will be. I still haven't even touched 95% of the HL mods sitting on my hard drive.
(Ironically, I spend most of my computer time downloading mods/mappacks. I want to get them before they disappear.) |

I was doing the same thing: downloading lots of mods/maps, thinking that I would eventually play them. That never happened, and I decided to play just the best of them (that's still a LOT). I think you should take time to smell the roses .

Disagree! Look at all those Doom maps still available, they should have disapeared long time ago! I think there will always be people preventing good maps from being pushed to oblivion . |
