Hi guys. As you have probably noticed, the Half-Life reviews have become rarer and rarer around here. For my part, it's been a combination of laziness, time constraints, and a bit of a waning interest in Half-Life. That said, I still like Half-Life, both single player and a bunch of the multiplayer mods, and I still map when I get a chance (something I'd really like to have more time for again).

I've got a huge backlist of other games already purchased waiting for me and I'll definitely be picking up HL 2 and just about anything else released related to HL like expansion packs and HL:Source. And as mentioned above, I plan to finish the HL mod I'm currently making. While I enjoy playing the mods and writing the reviews, they have really slipped down on the ol' priority list.

Bottom line: I don't plan to write reviews here for Half-Life 2. But I would like to make the best effort we can to finish off the bulk of the remaining unreviewed Half-Life packs. Both spect3r and I will be participating in this little gambit (Calyst is concentrating on Quake I reviews), but it needs help from you guys.

Here's how it works. Below is my accumulated list of the larger, more popular Half-Life packs that aren't reviewed here yet, alphabetized for no real reason. What we want to hear from you guys is for which of these packs you'd most like to read a review. So reply below with a small handful of your picks, and spec and I will take whichever ones are picked the most as our upcoming assignments. I'll keep this list updated with posted reviews and new entries.

The List:
  1. Back to Xen 2
  2. Borked Hazard Mod - incomplete
  3. Brave Brain
  4. Bugstompers - being reviewed by spect3r
  5. Cthulhu
  6. Deja Vu
  7. Force of Evil
  8. Half-Life Malevolance
  9. Half-Life: Invasion
  10. Half-Quake: The Present
  11. Hard 2
  12. Haywire
  13. Heart of Evil: Alamo - Reviewed 12th September, 2004
  14. Heavily Armed - incomplete
  15. HLWood
  16. Last-Life
  17. Minimicus
  18. Moonwalker
  19. No Exit
  20. Operation Black Thunder
  21. Operations 1942
  22. Prize
  23. Project AMOD - incomplete
  24. Project Focus North
  25. Retribution (did anyone ever find a download for this?)
  26. Riot in Progress
  27. Sagharmath
  28. Solo Operations
  29. Space Lasercore
  30. The Gate - Reviewed 25th February, 2006
  31. The Puppy Years - Reviewed 12th October, 2004
  32. Timefall
  33. Times of Troubles - Reviewed 31st August, 2005
  34. Unknown Menace - Reviewed 15th February, 2005
  35. Xen Campaigns - for Opposing Force
Also suggested:
  1. Alternative Way
  2. Episode Power Plant and China
  3. Breakdown / Breakdown 2
  4. Half-Life: Visitors - Reviewed 7th September, 2005
  5. Life's End - Reviewed 27th August, 2006
  6. Black Ops - being reviewed by Unq

If you want to suggest a pack that I've missed (were there any standouts among all the foreign mods discussed on this forum?) or announce a newly-released one that's fine. It would be helpful if you provide a link to the mod's homepage or download. I can do the same for people who are interested in the mods on the list above.

One note: there are a few unreleased Half-Life mods out there that I plan on reviewing as soon as they are released. Nightwatch, for example.

Any suggestions or comments on this idea are welcome. No guarantees on the swiftness of reviews, but I think this will spur up some interest so that between spec and I we can handle the bulk of the requests in a timely manner.

I didn't even know about some of those levels. Bugstompers sounds interesting--is it inspired by Starship Troopers?

I don't know much about most of the mods in my list. In fact, I haven't played any of them at this point.

Bugstompers and The Puppy Years were both just recently completed mods by Brendon Chung, author of Bootleg Squadrog among others.

His site is here: http://www.planethalflife.com/blended/

Unquenque; I hadn't heard of three packs out of the bunch until reading your post - can you help me locate these?:

- Hard 2
- Space Lasercore
- Xen Campaigns

(I'm especially curious about the sequel to Hard.)

As for the review list; here are my suggestions -

1) Drop these off:

- Borked Hazard (seems incomplete / full o' bugs)
- Heavily Armed (unplayable due to this only release is a very early beta)
- Project AMOD (interesting in parts though 70% of it consists of travelling through empty and unfinished maps)

2) Squeeze these in:

- Alternative Way
- Episode Power Plant and China
- Breakdown / Breakdown 2

3) The ones I would like to see reviewed here:

- Back to Xen 2
- Times of Troubles
- Unknown Menace

...

On a side note, still there isn't a single download link for Retribution.

Thanks for the reply, prisoner. I've edited the first post with links to the ones you were interested in. Space Lasercore is by Tlax, who also did Timefall.

Firstly, I am thrilled to see a sequel to Hard. I had talked to the creator about a year or so back and he said he didn't think he would be making a sequel. I'm very glad to see he changed his mind, being this was one of the most enjoyable mods I'd played in quite some time. Secondly, if someone could find a link not involving fileplanet for the Brendan Chung releases, that would be greatly appreciated. Thirdly, and most importantly, I would like to review The Gate. It might take a little while, being that I have college and all, but nothing would please me more.

You are free to post your review of The Gate in a new thread; that's not what this thread is for.

Regarding "Borked Hazard", I still haven't been able to download it. Grrr . . . there isn't even a viable link at the website anymore.

Talon; I can upload Borked Hazard to a Yahoo Briefcase account for you and the others those are willing to download it. Though we have a slight issue here - as I posted earlier on another thread, the authors included both a .pak file and the individual files in their respected folders. As a result, the .zip file weights at 78mb where in a properly packed archive it would have been 40mb's.

If that does not matter for you to get the original file intact, I can repack the whole thing and upload it - maybe it'll be better for all the people with 56k modems if we distribute this alternate .zip instead of the original?

I demand that if The Gate is ever reviewed, then it will be dragged into a hellhole pit and totally beaten until death is inevitable!

That or simply write a true objective review about it, pointing out all (yes ALL) the bad parts.

I liked The Gate.

Aside from the stolen music it was a good effort. Sure there was some cheesy voice acting, and some of the models seemed a bit out of place, but overall it was an excellent effort. The mapping was well done in most places and looked good. The action was good, with some really nifty combat at times. The story was a bit silly but at least it HAD one...

Edited the top post with some new links, including the newly released Half-Life: Visitors, and to gray out the incomplete ones.

PS - Vote more, people! This only works with your input. Thanks.

Prisoner849, if you could upload it to a yahoo briefcase, that would be great--especially if you could perhaps remove all the unnecessary files thereby reducing the weight of the file.

Unq, my votes are for Cthulhu, Saharmath, Riot in Progress, Unknown Faction, and Moonwalker. JUst my two cents.

Regarding The Gate, now that I have a much-improved PC, I'll probably play the mod sometime soon to see for myself what all the controversy is about.

Please review: HL Invasion;Moonwalker;Riot in Progress;Times of Trouble
Unknown Menace;Timefall

Have played a dozen maps of Hard2 and well-šehm-im not excited..

For the record: I have a version of Moonwalker that is still Beta (V1.01) but
complete. Is there final out or is this version the last avail?

Unknown Menace is also not a Final Version.

I have just completed playing through Visitors and I hereby state that it's an instant, absolute classic by my book. Of course it has it's share of problems, most significant being the slowdown through the last couple of maps - but it's highly enjoyable. Recommended.

Here you go, Talon ~

-

Borked Hazard v1.2b - Re-packed (Unofficial)

Changes:
* No installer anymore, packaged as a virus-free, easy to use .rar archive.
* Combined with the latest .dll patch.
* Now free of tons of absolutely useless files, including:
Quote:
- 40MB of compile leftovers
- 45 maps (all of them are somewhat early versions of the final 15)
- All kinds of unused or unmodified artwork; texture packages, models, sprites, skymaps... + sounds.
- Miscellaneous files: WC configs, multiplayer related addons, nodgraphs of beta maps and an unused titles text.
- Spirit of Half-Life .dll (not used in any way)

* All folders have been cleaned up and archived accordingly in a single .pak file.
* Finally, liblist file has been modified accordingly.

Result:
Original setup: 77mb + 1mb patch / 197mb installed
Repacked .rar: 37mb / 96mb installed

Download:
I splitted the .rar to 13 parts, 3mb each, due to my upload limitations. For parts 1-9, go to http://briefcase.yahoo.com and sign in as borkedhazard with the password public. For the remaining parts, sign in as borkedhazard2 with the same password. Be sure to also get the .bat file included in the second account. Just have all the 13 parts in the same folder, double-click on the .bat file and it'll recreate the main file, bhaz12b.rar in a second...

Get ready for one of the most incomplete, inconsistent, unbalanced and amateurish mapping attempts for Half-Life you'll ever see.

-

By the way, Unquenque; is it possible for you to upload this repack to 3DDownloads?

Well alright! I haven't even downloaded it yet and I know I'm gonna like Visitors! The main character's a good ol' Alabama boy just like me. Unfortunately, however, he is a lawyer.

As for Hard II - well; I don't mind ripping of weapon models and such, but this... Todesangst, anyone?

Thank you for the cleaned-up version of Borked Hazard, prisoner849! I know it probably sucks, but I like to download and eventually play all sp mods, even those that should've never seen the light of day. I'll be downloading it soon.

The Aztecs' Bane comes to mind.

In other news. I was reading the front page news on H16 (I can at least still do that) and from what I can tell from DW's post, there is something bad wrong with him.
